1. Summary
In continuing NetApp support for VMware ESX Server
capabilities, this product
bulletin announces support for Windows® XP as a guest operating system and
VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) with VMware ESX Server connecting
to NetApp storage systems with FCP or iSCSI. VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure provides the ability to
host individual desktops inside virtual machines running on top of ESX
Servers. For more information about VMware VDI, see http://www.vmware.com/products/vdi/. 2. What's
New?
NetApp adds support for Windows XP as a guest operating system
on top of an ESX Server connected to NetApp storage. Please see the NetApp
Interoperability Matrix- http://now.netapp.com/matrix/mtx/login.do-for more information
about supported ESX Server configurations.
NetApp adds support for VMware Virtual Desktop
Infrastructure with the Windows XP guest operating system. As with Windows
2000 and Server 2003 guest operating system support, Windows XP virtual
machine registry setting changes are required to ensure proper operation.See Section 3, "System Requirements." Support Requirements The following chart lists the hardware and software
platform requirements for support of VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure with
FCP and iSCSI storage systems:
At this time, there are no host utilities for use by Windows XP.
Using VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Windows XP as a guest
operating system requires an ESX Server configuration supported by NetApp.
Please refer to the NetApp Interoperability Matrix (http://now.netapp.com/matrix/mtx/login.do)
for currently supported configurations.
Using Windows XP virtual machines with virtual SCSI disks requires
registry setting updates.
Disk Class Timeout in a Windows guest operating system with virtual
disks must be changed from the default setting of 60 seconds (Windows
registry setting HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\disk). Please see the latest iSCSI
Windows Host Utilities for Native OS Release Notes here
or FCP Windows Host Utilities for Native OS Release Notes here
for additional information and instructions on how to change the registry
setting. Although there are no Windows host utilities for Windows XP, the
information contained within their release notes is applicable to XP as well.
The configuration of Windows XP and VDI with NFS from an ESX Server to
NetApp storage systems is not currently supported. Qualification of this
configuration is planned for a later date.
SnapDrive® for Windows does not currently support Windows XP, and
therefore is not supported in a Windows XP virtual machine.
SnapDrive for Windows and SnapDrive for UNIX® are not currently
supported with FCP or iSCSI connections to NetApp storage from the ESX Server
host operating system.
Support for SnapDrive and SnapManager® applications from the ESX
Server host operating system is planned with a future release of SnapDrive.
There is no new product offering
for support of VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure or Microsoft® Windows XP
as a guest operating system. There are no NetApp FCP or iSCSI host utilities
for Windows XP. Software Subscription Plans Not applicable. Upgrades Not
applicable. Quoting NetApp does not currently offer
licenses, part numbers, or other host products in support of VMware Virtual
Desktop Infrastructure. NetApp support of the VMware Virtual Desktop
Infrastructure is available through existing SupportEdge contracts and
processes. Product Availability NetApp continues to offer the
Data ONTAP iSCSI license free of charge to customers who meet certain
requirements via the iSCSI Enablement Program. Details about the free iSCSI
License Enablement Program are available here. The NetApp iSCSI host
utilities are available free of charge and for download from the NOW™ (NetApp on the Web) site, with a valid

part of ESX Server. Products need to be validated against the Netapp
Regulatory Compliance Country List prior to order submission. The list is
available at PartnerCenter
Compliance Information. This is required to ensure that products are
being sold only in the countries in which NetApp has received regulatory
compliance certification. For further information on this requirement please
see the Regulatory
Compliance Verification Product Bulletin. Not applicable. For the latest NetApp configuration support and
interoperability information, see NetApp Interoperability Matrix-http://now.netapp.com/matrix/mtx/login.do.
